President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced major leadership changes in several federal universities, including the University of Abuja, which has been renamed Yakubu Gowon University.

As part of the restructuring, Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi has been removed as Vice-Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University.
-Professor Lar Patricia Manko has been appointed Acting Vice-Chancellor for six months, but she will not be eligible for the permanent role.
“Senator Lanre Tejuoso is now Pro-Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University, while Senator Joy Emordi takes over as Pro-Chancellor of Alvan Ikoku University of Education.
At the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN): Professor Polycarp Emeka Chigbu was removed as Acting Vice-Chancellor before his tenure’s expiration on February 14.
Professor Oguejiofu T. Ujam has been appointed as Acting Vice-Chancellor for six months under the same ineligibility rule.
Gen. Ike Nwachukwu has been reassigned as Pro-Chancellor of the University of Uyo, while Engineer Olubunmi Kayode Ojo takes over at UNN.
Additional Pro-Chancellor appointments include:
Professor Zubairu Tajo Abdullahi at Federal University of Lokoja.
Senator Sani Stores at Alvan Ikoku University of Education.
Barrister Olugbenga Kukoyi at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.
The changes take effect immediately, with President Tinubu emphasizing that the restructuring aims to strengthen governance, promote academic excellence, and enhance accountability in Nigeria’s higher education sector.
